Ecclésiaste 9.7

Va manger ton pain dans la joie et boire ton vin dans la gaieté, puisque Dieu prend déjà plaisir à ce que tu fais !

World English Bible Go your way--eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works.

7 à 10 Plusieurs mettent ces versets dans la bouche de l'homme qui succombe au doute et se livre à la folie (verset 3) : puisque Dieu ne fait aucune différence entre le juste et l'injuste, ne nous occupons que du présent !

Nous pensons qu'ici, comme dans les passages correspondants (8.15, note), l'Ecclésiaste parle en son propre nom. L'insensé ne parlerait pas de Dieu comme il le fait au verset 7. Il s'agit pour le sage de ne pas se laisser aller au désespoir et au scepticisme, et pour cela l'auteur l'engage à jouir du bonheur que Dieu met à sa portée, ce qui est une manière d'honorer Dieu.

Avec joie..., gaiement. Quelques ténèbres que nous ayons devant nous, c'est un devoir que d'entrer, en jouissant, dans les bienveillantes intentions que, de tout temps (dès longtemps), Dieu a eues à notre égard. Nous n'avons point ici le : Mangeons et buvons, de 1Corinthiens 15.32, mais plutôt 1Timothée 4.4 : Tout ce que Dieu a créé est bon, et rien n'est, à rejeter, quand on en use avec actions de grâces.

Dès longtemps Dieu prend plaisir à ce que tu fais. En te privant de ces joies, par une résolution que t'aurait inspirée le désespoir, tu passerais à côté de la volonté divine.
