Grec : "Selon son bon plaisir, qu'il avait résolu auparavant en luimême, (Ephésiens 1.9) pour l'administration (économie) de la plénitude des temps, de réunir (récapituler, résumer) toutes choses en Christ, celles qui sont dans les cieux, et celles qui sont sur la terre, en lui-même." C'est ici l'un de ces passages de Paul difficiles à entendre, parce que l'immensité de la pensée rend les termes un peu vagues, à force de les généraliser.

Il faut d'abord se rendre compte des mots mêmes, afin de mieux saisir l'idée.

"Pour l'administration..." marque le terme, le temps où Dieu devait exécuter le mystère de sa volonté, son bon plaisir, qu'il avait résolu en lui-même. (Ephésiens 1.9)

Ce terme, ce but, c'est ce que l'apôtre appelle la dispensation ou l'administration de la plénitude des temps, c'est-à-dire l'administration que Dieu lui-même prendrait en main quand les temps seraient accomplis. (Galates 4.4)

Maintenant que faut-il entendre par cette administration ? Originairement, ce terme (économie) signifie le gouvernement, la gestion d'une maison et des biens qui lui appartiennent. (Luc 16.2)

Paul emploie quelquefois ce mot en parlant de son propre ministère, de l'administration spirituelle qui lui a été confiée. (Ephésiens 3.2 ; 1Corinthiens 9.17 ; Colossiens 1.25) Il est l'économe, l'administrateur des mystères de Dieu. (1Corinthiens 4.1 ; comparez 1.7 ; 1Pierre 4.10) Ici, c'est à Dieu lui-même qu'est attribuée l'administration, parce qu'il s'agit des grands faits de la rédemption et de tous ses résultats jusqu'à la fin des siècles.

Pour cette raison, les Pères de l'Eglise grecque entendent par ce terme l'incarnation, le grand "mystère de piété," évidemment désigné ci-dessus, (Ephésiens 1.9) il faut compléter cette interprétation en y ajoutant toute l'œuvre de Christ. C'est par cette œuvre entière, en effet, que Dieu devait réunir toutes choses en Christ. Le verbe ici employé signifie récapituler, ou résumer sous un seul chef.

Un passage tout à fait parallèle de l'épître aux Colossiens (Colossiens 1.20) jette beaucoup de lumière sur la pensée de l'apôtre : "Et de réconcilier toutes choses avec lui, ayant fait la paix par le sang de la croix." Tels sont le but et le moyen. Mais il reste la question la plus controversée à laquelle ces paroles aient donné lieu : Qu'est-ce que ces toutes choses, tant celles qui sont au ciel, que celles qui sont sur la terre et qui doivent être réunies en Christ ?

Ces termes sont tellement universels, qu'ils font d'abord penser à la création tout entière (le neutre pluriel, ta panta, ne pouvant pas même se restreindre aux créatures intelligentes). Cette idée n'est point étrangère aux enseignements de l'Ecriture. (Romains 8.19, suivants ; Apocalypse 21.1) Tout doit être renouvelé et restauré en Christ, et ce sens se retrouve même dans le verbe composé que nous traduisons ici par réunir ou récapituler.

Ensuite, comme il est évident que ce qui est sur la terre comprend avant tout les hommes pécheurs, de même ce qui est dans les cieux doit comprendre aussi en premier lieu, soit "les esprits des justes parvenus à la perfection," soit les intelligences célestes, les anges de Dieu.

Mais quelle part les anges ont-ils en Christ ? D'abord, il est leur Chef aussi bien que celui de ses rachetés ; (Ephésiens 1.20,21) puis, quoiqu'ils n'eussent pas besoin de la rédemption qu'il a accomplie, ils y participent dans ce sens que, toute la famille de Dieu au ciel et sur la terre (Ephésiens 3.15) formant un ensemble plein d'harmonie et d'amour, tous les membres du corps souffrent lorsque quelques-uns souffrent, et tous prennent part à la guérison de ceux qui étaient malades, au recouvrement de ceux qui étaient perdus. (Ephésiens 3.10 ; Luc 15.7,10 ; 1Pierre 1.12 ; Hébreux 2.14 ; 12.22 ; Apocalypse 19.10)

Aussi les chants de l'armée céleste furent-ils les premiers à célébrer la naissance du Sauveur. (Luc 2.13,14) La rédemption en Christ embrasse donc le ciel et la terre, rapprochés, réconciliés par le rétablissement d'une vie nouvelle, d'un royaume spirituel et éternel. C'est ainsi que, dans un royaume troublé par la révolte d'une province, tout le pays participe à la réconciliation des rebelles, puisqu'il en recueille le repos, la prospérité, et que tous s'unissent dès lors par le lien d'une même fidélité et d'un même amour pour leur prince.

La pensée de Paul nous conduit-elle plus loin encore ? Faut-il suivre ceux qui voient dans ces paroles le rétablissement universel, le salut final, non seulement de tous les hommes, mais des anges déchus et de Satan lui-même, qui seraient compris dans les choses qui sont dans les cieux ? (Comp Ephésiens 6.12) A la rigueur, il faut le reconnaître, les termes dont Paul se sert ici peuvent s'étendre jusque-là ; mais le passage parallèle déjà cité (Colossiens 1.20) nous ramène au grand moyen de l'œuvre de Christ, au sang de la croix, et l'Ecriture nous autorise-t-elle à en étendre l'efficace jusqu'aux anges déchus, et à affirmer que tous les hommes voudront ou pourront se repentir un jour pour venir y puiser la réconciliation ? Certaines déclarations de la Parole de Dieu semblent témoigner, hélas ! du contraire.

N'oublions pas cependant que toute domination doit enfin appartenir au Roi de gloire ; et que le jour doit venir où "Dieu sera tout en tous." (1Corinthiens 15.28)
