Telle est la part des païens convertis (vous aussi). Ils y ont été amenés par la Parole de la vérité. Parole divine, vérité divine, moyen tout-puissant de l'action de Dieu sur les âmes. Et l'apôtre identifie cette parole avec l'Evangile du salut, cette bonne nouvelle qui renferme toutes les bénédictions spirituelles, tous les dons de la grâce gratuite de Dieu, dont l'apôtre a parlé jusqu'ici.

Grec : "En qui aussi ayant cru ;" les uns rapportent ce relatif à Christ, les autres à l'Evangile. Par la foi le chrétien reçoit l'Esprit (l'Esprit de la promesse, c'est-à-dire qui avait été promis), qui régénère et qui est le sceau de Dieu posé sur cette âme devenue sa propriété. (2Corinthiens 1.22)

- On peut voir dans ce verset quels sont, pour le croyant, les deux fondements divins et inébranlables de son assurance du salut, les signes de son élection.

D'une part, la PAROLE DE LA VÉRITÉ, l'Evangile du salut, le témoignage de Dieu ; d'autre part, LE SCEAU INTERIEUR DE L'ESPRIT DE DIEU , "rendant témoignage à notre esprit que nous sommes enfants de Dieu." (Romains 8.16)

Toute assurance qui ne repose pas sur ces deux témoignages divins inséparables, n'est qu'une trompeuse illusion.

- On peut relever de même quelle est l'œuvre entière du salut d'une âme : l'élection éternelle de Dieu le Père ; (Ephésiens 1.4,11) le rachat par le sang de Christ ; (Ephésiens 1.7) le sceau et la sanctification de l'Esprit. (Ephésiens 1.13) Toute l'Ecriture est remplie de cette profonde révélation du Dieu trois fois saint ; mais ceux-là seuls la reçoivent qui font de ce salut une expérience vivante ; car ce mystère est inaccessible à la spéculation.
