Le Dieu de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, le Dieu qui l'a envoyé, ressuscité, glorifié, et qui reste éternellement son Dieu (1Corinthiens 3.23 ; 15.28 ; comparez ci-dessus Ephésiens 1.3), est le seul vrai Dieu, le seul qui puisse être notre Dieu ; (Jean 20.17 note) il est en même temps le Père de gloire, Celui qui possède la plénitude de toutes les perfections infinies (Actes 7.2) et qui est pourtant uni à nous par le lien le plus intime ; nous, ses enfants, nous pouvons tout lui demander dans nos prières, comme le fait ici l'apôtre.

L'apôtre sait que ceux à qui il parle sont déjà "scellés du Saint-Esprit," (Ephésiens 1.13) et il demande que Dieu leur donne aussi un esprit qui pouvait manquer encore à plusieurs d'entre eux, et dans lequel tout chrétien doit faire de continuels progrès : un esprit de sagesse et de révélation.

Plusieurs interprètes pensent que l'apôtre désigne par ces mots le Saint-Esprit lui-même en le nommant d'après la nature de ses opérations et de ses dons. (Jean 14.16,17 ; 15.26 ; 16.13 ; Romains 8.2,15 ; 1Pierre 4.14)

Ici il serait appelé l'Esprit de sagesse (expression à peu près synonyme de "l'Esprit de vérité"), parce qu'il est la plénitude de la lumière divine. Et, en tant qu'il manifeste dans le cœur des fidèles ces trésors de vérité, l'apôtre le nommerait l'Esprit de révélation produisant la connaissance de Dieu, de ses perfections, de ses œuvres. (Colossiens 1.9)

On peut objecter à cette explication :

1° que dans l'original le mot esprit n'est pas précédé de l'article ;

2° que l'apôtre prie pour ses lecteurs parce qu'il les sait scellés du Saint-Esprit ; il n'a donc plus à le demander pour eux ;

3° que les premiers mots de Ephésiens 1.18 où Paul demande que ses lecteurs aient "les yeux de leur cœur éclairés" montrent que par cet esprit de sagesse et de révélation, il entend les dispositions produites en eux par l'Esprit saint.
