Ces premiers mots doivent être intimement liés avec ce qui précède, car ils sont encore l'objet du verbe "qu'il vous donne," (Ephésiens 1.17) en sorte que la construction et le sens littéral peuvent se rendre ainsi : "Qu'il vous donne un esprit de sagesse et de révélation, les yeux de votre cœur éclairés pour que vous sachiez..."

Il faut, en effet, que Dieu nous donne des yeux éclairés (Grec : "illuminés") pour voir sa sagesse et pour connaître "l'espérance de notre vocation ;" car nos yeux sont par nature "obscurcis de ténèbres." (Ephésiens 4.18)

- Au lieu du mot esprit (ou entendement ou pensée) du texte reçu, il faut rétablir ici la variante qui porte votre cœur : "que les yeux de votre cœur soient éclairés."

Le cœur, d'après l'Ecriture, est le siège des affections morales : de lui "procèdent les sources de la vie" dans tous les sens du mot ; (Proverbes 4.23) c'est pourquoi on le trouve souvent placé dans des rapports où, selon nos idées reçues, on aurait plutôt attendu une expression qui désignât nos facultés intellectuelles.

Ainsi Matthieu 13.15 ; Romains 1.21 ; 2Corinthiens 4.6, et fréquemment ailleurs.
