Voilà, exposé avec une admirable clarté, le rapport des œuvres et de la foi dans le chrétien.

Nous pouvons si peu être sauvés par nos œuvres, qu'avant d'en faire qui soient vraiment bonnes (jamais Paul ne désigne ainsi les œuvres de la loi, faites par l'homme irrégénéré), il faut que nous soyons nous-mêmes l'ouvrage de Dieu, créés de nouveau en Jésus-Christ, (2Corinthiens 5.17 ; Galates 6.15) c'est-à-dire par une communion vivante avec lui, au moyen de la foi.

Mais le but final, indispensable de cette création nouvelle et spirituelle, ce sont les bonnes œuvres. Quiconque n'y marche pas, prouve par cela même qu'il n'a pas eu part à cette nouvelle création.

Les termes dont se sert l'apôtre (littér. "les bonnes œuvres auxquelles Dieu a préparé d'avance que nous marchions en elles") peuvent laisser dans le doute si sa pensée est que Dieu nous a préparés pour les bonnes œuvres, ou les bonnes œuvres pour nous ; aussi les versions et les interprètes varient-ils sur ce point.

Peut-être l'apôtre a-t-il laissé ce verbe sans objet bien défini, pour que la pensée se porte tout entière sur les desseins de Dieu qu'il indique ici : Dieu a tout préparé d'avance, tout rendu possible en nous par son œuvre de grâce, et autour de nous dans le monde, dans son règne où il y a tant de bien à faire, afin que nous marchions dans une vie sainte, dévouée, seule chose que l'on puisse appeler du nom de bonnes œuvres.
