Ephésiens 2.13

νυνὶ δὲ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὑμεῖς οἵ ποτε ὄντες μακρὰν ἐγενήθητε ἐγγὺς ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ Χριστοῦ.

Avec ce verset commence l'autre terme du grand parallèle que l'apôtre trace ici entre l'état précédent de ses lecteurs (Ephésiens 2.11,12) et ce qu'ils sont devenus par l'œuvre de la rédemption. (Ephésiens 2.13-22)

Dès l'abord il fait ressortir les contrastes : en Christ, opposé à sans Christ ; (Ephésiens 2.12) vous avez été rapprochés, opposé à éloignés et à séparés, étrangers. (Ephésiens 2.12) Mais, afin de marquer aussi dès l'abord le grand moyen de cette délivrance, auquel il reviendra à chaque pas dans cet admirable développement, l'apôtre l'attribue ici déjà au sang de Christ, c'est-à-dire à la mort du Médiateur, au sacrifice de la réconciliation, accompli dans "sa chair," (Ephésiens 2.15) par "sa croix." (Ephésiens 2.16)

Cette pensée fondamentale, qui inspire tout ce morceau, peut servir à décider la question sur laquelle se divisent les interprètes, les uns soutenant que l'apôtre n'y parle que du rapprochement et de la réconciliation des Juifs et des païens parvenus à la même foi, les autres y voyant avant tout la réconciliation avec Dieu et par suite seulement celle des Juifs et des païens. Une étude attentive de ces versets prouve jusqu'à l'évidence que ce dernier sens est bien la pensée de l'apôtre. (Voy. la note suivants)

Cette pensée est double, et il faut, par la nature même des choses, qu'elle le soit, puisque ce n'est qu'en se rapprochant de Dieu que les hommes divisés se rapprochent les uns des autres ; c'est leur réconciliations avec Dieu qui les réconcilie entre eux, c'est la paix de Dieu qui devient leur paix mutuelle, c'est l'amour de Dieu qui tue en eux l'inimitié. (Ephésiens 2.14-16 ; comparez Ephésiens 2.17,18)
