Le jour de l'Eternel : voyez 2.12, note. Le jugement de Babylone est le premier et grand acte du jugement du monde. Le texte de Joël 1.15 est évidemment sous les yeux de l'auteur. Comparez avec ce qui suit le tableau tracé par ce prophète de la journée de l'Eternel (Joël 2.1-11,30-31 ; 3.14-16).

Nous avons dans ce texte, une description de la terrible désolation de Babylone opérée par les Mèdes et les Perses.

Ses habitants qui, en temps de paix, étaient arrogants, hautains, et fiers de leur puissance, se sont rapidement découragés quand survint l'épreuve. Face à cette dévastation, leurs visages se sont alors littéralement décomposés. Tous leurs espoirs et leur bien-être allaient s'évanouir.

En ce jour annoncé, les étoiles du ciel ne donneront plus leur lumière, le soleil sera obscurci. De telles expressions sont souvent utilisées par les prophètes, pour décrire les graves agitations au sein des gouvernements. Dieu punira ces nations pour leur iniquité, en particulier pour cette arrogance, qui abaisse tant les hommes. On assistera alors a de véritables scènes d'horreur. Ceux qui se joindront à Babylone, devront alors subir ses tourments, Apocalypse 18:4. Les hommes voudront donner tout ce qu'ils possèdent, pour sauver leur vie, mais aucun d'entre eux ne pourra, par ses richesses, être sauvé.

Arrêtons-nous un instant pour nous demander pourquoi les hommes sont-ils aussi barbares et cruels, et à quel point leur nature s'est corrompue. Pourquoi les enfants en bas âge souffrent-ils déjà de leur méchanceté, prouvant qu'il existe une culpabilité originelle, qui pénalise la vie dès son commencement ?

Le « jour de l'Éternel » sera en effet terrible, animé violemment par la colère divine, au-delà de tout ce que nous pourrions simplement imaginer. Il n'y aura aucun endroit où le pécheur pourra se réfugier ou tenter de fuir. Beaucoup d'entre eux, hélas, ne croient pas à ce qu'annonce ce texte !
