Cette effusion de l'Esprit saint doit préparer le peuple de l'Eternel à la venue finale du règne de Dieu. Aussi le prophète y rattache-t-il immédiatement les signes précurseurs du jour de l'Eternel, qui auront lieu et sur la terre et dans le ciel. Ici-bas : le sang, le feu, la fumée, effets soit de tremblements de terre et d'éruptions volcaniques, soit d'une guerre terrible dans laquelle le sang coule, les villes et les villages sont consumés et les tourbillons de fumée portent au loin la nouvelle de ces désastres. La première Pentecôte a été suivie pour le peuple juif de la ruine de Jérusalem et de la dévastation de la Terre Sainte, Mais la Pentecôte dure encore. Elle s'est étendue au monde entier, à toute chair dans le sens le plus large du mot, ce qui nous prouve que l'application de la prophétie va plus loin encore et que les signes précurseurs dont parle Joël n'ont point eu leur réel accomplissement à l'époque de la ruine de Jérusalem.
