Mon cœur gémit. Comparez 16.9,11. Le prophète est ému de pitié pour ce peuple, qui est cependant un des pires ennemis de Juda : trait remarquable de charité humaine et universelle ; il sait se mettre au-dessus de ces haines nationales alors si vivaces. De tels accents ne se rencontreraient guères chez les poètes d'autres peuples.

L'ennemi vient du nord ; car c'est au midi, dans le pays d'Edom, que les Moabites cherchent une retraite (comparez 16.1).

Tsoar : probablement près de l'extrémité sud de la mer Morte (voir Genèse 19.22).

Eglath-Schelischia. Ces mots, que l'on traduit quelquefois par : la génisse de trois ans, paraissent être ici un nom de ville : probablement l'Agalla que Josèphe mentionne à côté de Tsoar et de Horonaïm.

Luchith : saint Jérôme la place entre Ar-Moab et Tsoar.

Horonaïm : d'après Eusèbe, à 12 kilomètres au sud de l'Arnon.
