Ville de chaos. Le mot hébreu thoou est très rare ; il renferme une allusion à Genèse 1.2, passage où il se rencontre pour la première fois. Il désigne l'état de confusion où était le monde avant que Dieu eût commencé à y introduire l'ordre en créant la lumière. Si on applique les versets 1 à 12 au jugement de la Palestine, il faut entendre par la ville-chaos Jérusalem : la ville éclairée de la révélation divine est devenue, par la violation des lois de Dieu, la cité de confusion. On pourrait comparer 32.12-14. Mais, si l'on se met à un point de vue plus général, ces mots offrent un sens qui nous paraît préférable : la ville-chaos est la cité maîtresse du monde ennemi de Jéhova, dans laquelle règnent à la fois le tumulte propre aux grandes capitales et le désordre d'une vie sans Dieu et sans loi. (L'Apocalypse exprime au fond la même idée par l'expression de gande Babylone ; d'après Genèse 11.9, Babel signifie confusion). Cette cité, centre de la vie de l'humanité, est le premier objet du jugement divin. Elle est mentionnée à plusieurs reprises dans la suite de notre morceau : 25.2 ; 26. 5 ; 27.10. Du reste, le tableau est ici intentionnellement vague, en sorte que l'on ne saurait dire laquelle des deux capitales du monde païen d'alors, Ninive on Babylone, le prophète a plus spécialement en vue. Comparez les prédictions de la ruine de Ninive (Michée 5.5-6 ; Nahum 2.1-13) et de celle de Babylone (Esaïe 13.1-22 ; 14.22-23), qui ont beaucoup de rapport avec notre passage.

On n'y peut entrer. Les décombres accumulés ferment l'entrée des maisons. Comparez l'expression toute pareille à propos de Tyr 23.1.
