Mais ceux qui tremblent aux commandements de notre Dieu n'en ont point donné non plus. Il faut penser à un avis tacite donné par l'attitude qu'avaient prise Esdras et la partie la plus zélée du peuple. Enfin l'Eternel commande et ne conseille pas.Et qu'il soit fait selon la loi ! Il ne s'agit pas ici de la loi Deutéronome 24.1-4, qui ne s'occupe que de la procédure à suivre lorsqu'il y a divorce, mais de la loi Exode 34.16 et Deutéronome 7.3, qui pose le principe et condamne les mariages mixtes.
