World English Bible You, Ezra, after the wisdom of your God who is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people who are beyond the River, all such as know the laws of your God; and teach him who doesn't know them.

L'édit revient à Esdras.

Etablis des juges. La colonie juive ne pouvait pas prospérer sans juges tirés de son sein, à cause de l'étroite union qu'il y avait chez elle entre le civil et le religieux.

Le peuple qui est au-delà du fleuve : non pas tous les habitants de cette vaste contrée, mais, comme les mots suivants l'indiquent, les Israélites qui s'y trouvent plus ou moins dispersés, mais que tu dois unir par ce lien à la fois civil et religieux.

Et celui qui ne les connaît pas... : parmi les Israélites d'abord, sans cependant qu'il faille refuser cet enseignement aux païens qui le demanderaient. Il semble qu'Artaxerxès, qui avait eu l'occasion de constater en la personne d'Esdras la consistance de caractère que donne à ses sectateurs la loi des Juifs, ait voulu, dans cet Occident où les Grecs devenaient si menaçants, favoriser la formation d'une nation forte et qui lui fût obligée, ainsi que son Dieu, par de grands et nombreux bienfaits.
