World English Bible Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky."

Dans le livre (bassépher, non : besépher, dans un livre). Les exégètes modernes enseignent, il est vrai, que le sens de la première de ces deux formes ne diffère en rien de celui de la seconde, et que la locution employée signifie simplement : Mets par écrit. Nous n'y contredisons pas grammaticalement. Mais de quelle manière mettre par écrit ? Sur une feuille volante ? Un ordre qui doit être transmis de génération en génération, pendant des siècles peut-être ? Le bon sens exige qu'il s'agisse réellement d'un volume proprement dit, soit déjà existant, soit à établir. Les découvertes modernes ont prouvé que, déjà à cette époque et même depuis des siècles, il existait chez les Egyptiens des écrits sur papyrus. Il sera question bientôt, dans l'Exode même, du Livre de l'alliance (24.4-7) ; un peu plus tard (Nombres 33.1-49), nous trouvons mentionné et reproduit le registre des campements au désert, écrit de la main de Moïse (versets 1 et 2) ; un peu plus tard encore est cité un troisième ouvrage : le Livre des batailles de l'Eternel (Nombres 21.4). Dans ce dernier, qui paraît avoir été un recueil poétique, étaient probablement inscrites et chantées les victoires remportées par l'Eternel en Egypte, en particulier le passage de la mer Rouge, avec le cantique du chapitre 15 (voir à 14.19). S'il s'agit ici d'un livre déjà existant, c'est probablement ce dernier.

Déclare à Josué. Cette commission de l'Eternel, confiée spécialement à Josué, le désigne d'avance comme le successeur de Moïse.
