Les cornes. Ces cornes formaient corps avec le revêtement d'airain qui recouvrait le bois d'acacia. Elles étaient à l'autel ce que l'autel était au sol (voir 20.24-25, note), le symbole de l'élévation vers le ciel et de la concentration de la vertu expiatoire ; aussi était-ce sur les cornes qu'on répandait le sang de la victime dans les sacrifices pour le péché 29.12 ; Lévitique 4.7 ; etc. C'étaient aussi ces cornes que saisissait le criminel menacé de mort afin d'implorer la protection divine (1Rois 1.50 ; 2.28). Rien n'autorise donc à voir dans ces cornes de l'autel le reste d'un ancien culte du taureau qui a pu exister chez les Hébreux (voir chapitre 32).
