Le témoignage : les deux tables de la loi. Rien d'autre ne se trouvait primitivement dans l'arche (1Rois 8.9). La cruche de manne fut placée devant l'arche (Exode 16.34), ainsi que la verge d'Aaron (Nombres 17.10), et le livre de la loi à côté de l'arche (Deutéronome 31.26).

L'épître aux Hébreux (Hébreux 9.4) dit que toutes ces choses étaient dans l'arche ; peut-être avaient-elles été renfermées dans la suite ? C'est ce qu'admettait la tradition rabbinique.
