Rappeler, dès l'abord, le grand fait de la rédemption, ce moyen unique du salut, c'était déjà réfuter les erreurs que l'apôtre allait combattre.

Le but final qu'avait le Sauveur en se donnant pour nos péchés, c'est-à-dire en sacrifice expiatoire, (1Timothée 2.6 ; 2.14) était de nous retirer (Grec : "arracher") de ce présent siècle mauvais ; le premier de ces actes désigne la rédemption accomplie sur le Calvaire, le second la rédemption ou délivrance qui s'opère chaque jour dans les croyants par la régénération. Ces deux actes de la grâce, bien que distincts, sont toujours inséparablement unis dans l'Ecriture ; et, en effet, l'un produit l'autre en tous ceux qui s'attachent au Sauveur par une foi vivante.

- Le présent siècle mauvais est l'économie actuelle, l'état présent de l'humanité déchue de Dieu et où règne le péché, en opposition au "siècle à venir" où cette domination du péché aura été anéantie. Par le double acte de rédemption dont parle ici l'apôtre, les rachetés de Christ sont, dès ici-bas, arrachés à l'un de ces "siècles," et mis en communion vivante avec l'autre, qu'ils possèdent en espérance.

Ces mots ne signifient point que Jésus-Christ ait été contraint par la volonté de Dieu de se donner pour nous ; il a offert son grand sacrifice par amour, comme Dieu a livré son Fils unique par amour. Mais Paul veut rappeler que toute l'œuvre du Sauveur a été accomplie en conformité avec la volonté de Dieu, et il donne ainsi une sanction souveraine à la doctrine qu'il va exposer, celle du salut de l'homme uniquement par la foi en ce sacrifice expiatoire, à l'exclusion de toute justice par les œuvres de la loi.
