Grec : "Car en Christ Jésus ni la circoncision ne peut rien, ni le prépuce, mais la foi opérante (ou agissante, ou efficace) par l'amour."

Rien d'extérieur n'assure le salut, ni les privilèges des Juifs, ni la moralité de quelques païens, mais uniquement la foi, dont l'énergie et la vie se montrent par la charité, qui est, à son tour, l'âme de la vie chrétienne.

Ici la foi est la racine, la charité est le fruit, et non l'inverse, comme le prétend l'Eglise romaine en traduisant : "la foi qui est opérée par la charité." Le mot employé par l'apôtre a toujours un sens actif et non passif. (Comparer Romains 7.5 ; 2Corinthiens 1.6 ; 4.12 ; Ephésiens 3.20 ; 1Thessaloniciens 2.13 ; 2Thessaloniciens 2.7)

Et d'où viendrait la charité si elle devait exister avant la foi qui seule peut la produire ? N'est-il pas clair d'ailleurs que l'apôtre motive (car) par ce verset la vérité du précédent, la justice par la foi ?

Ce passage, bien compris, indique clairement quel est le vrai rapport de la foi et de l'amour. La foi est le germe de la vie divine dans l'homme ; elle s'approprie Christ et son œuvre de rédemption, et elle ouvre au croyant l'accès à l'amour de Dieu. (Romains 5.1 suivants) Cet amour pouvant dès lors se répandre dans le cœur du fidèle, y devient la source de son amour pour Dieu et pour ses frères : or, cet amour, c'est l'accomplissement de la loi, c'est l'obéissance, c'est la sanctification, ce sont, en d'autres termes, les bonnes œuvres.

Ainsi, tout ce que le pécheur a reçu par la foi se manifeste, agit efficacement par l'amour ; la foi est opérante par l'amour, l'amour est fondé dans la foi. Il est vrai qu'il y a une foi morte qui ne produit rien de pareil ; (Jacques 2.14-17) il est vrai encore que l'amour est plus grand que la foi, parce que celle-ci doit être changée en vue lorsque le chrétien sera parvenu à la perfection, tandis que l'amour est la vie même du ciel. (1Corinthiens 13.13)

Aussi retrouvons-nous dans ces deux versets les trois grandes vertus chrétiennes : "A verset 5, il unit à la foi l'espérance, et maintenant la charité. C'est là tout le christianisme." Bengel.
