13-14 Le nom donné à l'endroit de l'apparition

Hagar reconnaît Dieu lui-même comme l'auteur de cette révélation. Elle s'écrie : Atta-El-Roï : Tu es un Dieu de vision, c'est-à-dire un Dieu qui voit et qu'on voit. Elle explique cette exclamation en disant qu'elle a vu le Dieu qui la voyait.

Cette parole : Ai-je donc vu...? est l'expression de la surprise. Dans ce désert même, l'endroit ou l'on pourrait le moins s'attendre à une révélation divine, Dieu l'a suivie du regard, et elle-même l'a vu. La traduction littérale de la question est : Ai-je donc vu ici même après celui qui me voyait ? Elle l'avait vu et reconnu comme par derrière au moment où il disparaissait.

Sara avait employé pour désigner Dieu le nom de Jéhova (versets 2 et 5); Hagar se sert du mot El, le Puissant ; ce terme, qui désigne le Dieu de la nature, est celui qui convient dans la bouche d'une femme étrangère à l'alliance.
