Caïn ayant refusé d'atténuer son crime en l'avouant, l'interrogatoire fait place à la sentence.

Qu'as-tu fait ? Question indignée qui n'attend aucune réponse ; elle a pour but de faire rentrer en lui-même le coupable endurci.

J'entends le sang... Littéralement : Voix du sang de ton frère criant à moi de la terre !

Aucun témoin n'ayant vu le meurtre, Caïn avait cru pouvoir le cacher en le niant ; il doit se convaincre avec effroi de la toute-science et de la toute-présence de Dieu. Le sang innocent répandu à la surface de la terre crie vers le ciel, siège du juge suprême, jusqu'à ce qu'il soit vengé. Comparez Job 16.18 ; Esaïe 26.21.
