Juda lui dit. C'est lui qui joue le rôle essentiel à ce moment important de l'histoire de Jacob : il obtient de son père qu'il laisse descendre Benjamin ; il intercède pour lui auprès de Joseph (chapitre 45), et c'est par lui que Jacob fait connaître à Joseph son arrivée (46.28). Il prend ainsi peu à peu, grâce à la supériorité morale dont il fait preuve, le rang de premier-né, que Jacob lui assignera solennellement au chapitre 49.

On voit combien il est faux de dire que l'histoire de Joseph a été écrite pour la glorification du royaume des dix tribus et de son principal ancêtre.
