Habacuc 2.5

Certes le vin est traître : l'arrogant ne reste pas tranquille, il élargit sa bouche comme le séjour des morts, il est insatiable comme la mort ; il accueille toutes les nations, il rassemble auprès de lui tous les peuples.
Le prophète Habacuc constate la triste rétribution réservée à tous les oppresseurs et aux arrogants qui font souffrir le peuple de Dieu. Les désirs de la chair, ainsi que toute vanité, sont des pièges dans lesquels l'homme tombe facilement ; ce sont ces derniers qui ont entraîné la captivité d'Israël parce qu'elle-même était dominée par ses péchés.

Il n’y a que ce qui a été acquis honnêtement qui puisse nous appartenir. Les richesses sont aussi fragiles que « l’argile. » L'or et l'argent finiront tôt ou tard par retourner en poussière. Ceux qui voyagent sur des pistes en terre battue ne sont pas très rapides et sont vite souillés : il en sera de même pour ceux qui « passent » en ce monde, dans l'abondance et les richesses. Ceux qui se pénalisent à vouloir garder jalousement ces faux trésors, en sont véritablement esclaves ; ils se chargent, par leur cupidité, d'un lourd fardeau ; de leur conduite, ils devront rendre des comptes un jour ! Ils trainent un lourd fardeau et finissent par errer vers la destruction et la perdition. Quelle sera l’issue d’une telle conduite ? Ce qui est acquis par la violence, aux dépens d'autrui sera repris par la force, par d'autres. La cupidité au sein d’une famille n’apporte que l'inquiétude et l'anxiété ; celui qui est avide de richesses tourmente sa propre maison ; pire encore, il attire la malédiction de Dieu sur toutes ses affaires.

Les richesses « licites » peuvent être une source de réconfort dans une maison, si elles sont acquises par la bénédiction de Dieu ; par contre, ce qui est acquis par la fraude et l’injustice n’apportera que pauvreté et ruine.

Et il y a pire : celui qui détruit peu à peu son âme par le péché la met en réel danger. Ceux qui commettent le mal contre leurs voisins se nuisent à eux-mêmes. Si le pécheur pense qu'il a géré ses mauvaises actions et sa violence avec art et ingéniosité, les richesses et les possessions qu'il a accumulées « témoigneront » contre lui.

Il n'existe pas de plus grands esclaves que ceux qui sont à la poursuite des richesses de ce monde. Qu'en résultera-t-il plus tard ? Ils restent sans cesse insatisfaits et déçus par ce qu'ils possèdent ; la soif de posséder est pire que la vanité et ne peut qu’attirer la colère divine.

Dieu manifeste Sa magnificence et Sa Gloire dans Sa création ici-bas, écrasant ainsi tout orgueil chez les humains.

Ce verset se rattache au premier membre du verset 4, dont il développe la pensée en l'appliquant plus directement au Chaldéen. Le vin est trompeur, perfide, puisqu'au lieu de donner la force et la vie à ceux qui s'y adonnent, il leur apporte la ruine (Proverbes 23.31-32). Nous savons par les écrivains anciens (Hérodote, Quinte-Curce, etc.) que les Babyloniens étaient très adonnés au vin, et ce fut, en effet, au moment même où Belsatsar se livrait à tous les excès de son intempérance que Babylone tomba aux mains de Cyrus (Daniel chapitre 5).
