Ainsi que le contexte le prouve évidemment l'auteur entend par ce mot une révolte persistante, une rechute totale et définitive, un abandon de la vérité évangélique, d'abord reconnue et admise. Et c'est contre ce péché-là qu'il prononce ces paroles sévères : il ne reste plus de sacrifice pour les péchés.
Le pécheur, n'ayant plus aucun moyen de réconciliation avec Dieu, se trouve seul en présence de la colère divine. Il en est réduit à (grec) une attente d'une sorte terrible, effrayante, d'un jugement ; il est réservé à l'ardeur du feu qui doit dévorer les adversaires (grec les opposants). Comparer Esaïe 26.11.
C'est qu'il est beaucoup plus coupable que si jamais il n'avait reçu la connaissance de la vérité. (1Timothée 2.4 ; 2Timothée 2.25 ; Jean 15.22)
Le verset Hébreux 10.29 en indique la raison.
- Quant à savoir jusqu'à quel point le croyant peut ainsi déchoir de la grâce, voir ce qui a été dit à Hébreux 6.6. Quoi qu'il en soit, l'auteur ne traite point la question théoriquement, il ne se livre à aucune spéculation théologique ; mais prenant les faits tels qu'ils se présentent à lui, voyant des chrétiens ébranlés dans leur foi, en danger d'abandonner l'Evangile, il en appelle à leur conscience et leur présente leur responsabilité ; et c'est ce qu'il y a toujours lieu de faire en un cas pareil.
