Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

For by this, the elders obtained testimony.
3
By faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.
4
By faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.
5
By faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn't see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.
6
Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
7
By faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
8
By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.
9
By faith, he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.
10
For he looked for the city which has the foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11
By faith, even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.
12
Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.
13
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14
For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
15
If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.
16
But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
17
By faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son;
18
even he to whom it was said, "In Isaac will your seed be called";
19
concluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.
20
By faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.
21
By faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
22
By faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.
23
By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
24
By faith, Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,
25
choosing rather to share ill treatment with God's people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time;
26
accounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
27
By faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28
By faith, he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
29
By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.
30
By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.
31
By faith, Rahab the prostitute, didn't perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.
32
What more shall I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets;
33
who, through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34
quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.
35
Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
36
Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.
37
They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated
38
(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.
39
These all, having had testimony given to them through their faith, didn't receive the promise,
40
God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Πίστει πλείονα θυσίαν Ἅβελ παρὰ Κάϊν προσήνεγκεν τῷ θεῷ, δι’ ἧς ἐμαρτυρήθη εἶναι δίκαιος, μαρτυροῦντος ἐπὶ τοῖς δώροις αὐτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ δι’ αὐτῆς ἀποθανὼν ἔτι λαλεῖ.

Πίστει Ἑνὼχ μετετέθη τοῦ μὴ ἰδεῖν θάνατον, καὶ οὐχ ηὑρίσκετο διότι μετέθηκεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός· πρὸ γὰρ τῆς μεταθέσεως μεμαρτύρηται εὐαρεστηκέναι τῷ θεῷ,

χωρὶς δὲ πίστεως ἀδύνατον εὐαρεστῆσαι, πιστεῦσαι γὰρ δεῖ τὸν προσερχόμενον τῷ θεῷ ὅτι ἔστιν καὶ τοῖς ἐκζητοῦσιν αὐτὸν μισθαποδότης γίνεται.

πίστει χρηματισθεὶς Νῶε περὶ τῶν μηδέπω βλεπομένων εὐλαβηθεὶς κατεσκεύασεν κιβωτὸν εἰς σωτηρίαν τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, δι’ ἧς κατέκρινεν τὸν κόσμον, καὶ τῆς κατὰ πίστιν δικαιοσύνης ἐγένετο κληρονόμος.

Πίστει καλούμενος Ἀβραὰμ ὑπήκουσεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τόπον ὃν ἤμελλεν λαμβάνειν εἰς κληρονομίαν, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν μὴ ἐπιστάμενος ποῦ ἔρχεται.

πίστει παρῴκησεν εἰς γῆν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας ὡς ἀλλοτρίαν, ἐν σκηναῖς κατοικήσας μετὰ Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰακὼβ τῶν συγκληρονόμων τῆς ἐπαγγελίας τῆς αὐτῆς·

ἐξεδέχετο γὰρ τὴν τοὺς θεμελίους ἔχουσαν πόλιν, ἧς τεχνίτης καὶ δημιουργὸς ὁ θεός.
11
πίστει καὶ αὐτῇ Σάρρᾳ δύναμιν εἰς καταβολὴν σπέρματος ἔλαβεν καὶ παρὰ καιρὸν ἡλικίας, ἐπεὶ πιστὸν ἡγήσατο τὸν ἐπαγγειλάμενον·

διὸ καὶ ἀφ’ ἑνὸς ἐγεννήθησαν, καὶ ταῦτα νενεκρωμένου, καθὼς τὰ ἄστρα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τῷ πλήθει καὶ ὡς ἡ ἄμμος ἡ παρὰ τὸ χεῖλος τῆς θαλάσσης ἡ ἀναρίθμητος.

Κατὰ πίστιν ἀπέθανον οὗτοι πάντες, μὴ λαβόντες τὰς ἐπαγγελίας, ἀλλὰ πόρρωθεν αὐτὰς ἰδόντες καὶ ἀσπασάμενοι, καὶ ὁμολογήσαντες ὅτι ξένοι καὶ παρεπίδημοί εἰσιν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.

οἱ γὰρ τοιαῦτα λέγοντες ἐμφανίζουσιν ὅτι πατρίδα ἐπιζητοῦσιν.
15
καὶ εἰ μὲν ἐκείνης μνημονεύουσιν ἀφ’ ἧς ἐξέβησαν, εἶχον ἂν καιρὸν ἀνακάμψαι·
16
νῦν δὲ κρείττονος ὀρέγονται, τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἐπουρανίου. διὸ οὐκ ἐπαισχύνεται αὐτοὺς ὁ θεὸς θεὸς ἐπικαλεῖσθαι αὐτῶν, ἡτοίμασεν γὰρ αὐτοῖς πόλιν.

Πίστει προσενήνοχεν Ἀβραὰμ τὸν Ἰσαὰκ πειραζόμενος, καὶ τὸν μονογενῆ προσέφερεν ὁ τὰς ἐπαγγελίας ἀναδεξάμενος,
18
πρὸς ὃν ἐλαλήθη ὅτι Ἐν Ἰσαὰκ κληθήσεταί σοι σπέρμα,
19
λογισάμενος ὅτι καὶ ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγείρειν δυνατὸς ὁ θεός· ὅθεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐν παραβολῇ ἐκομίσατο.
20
Πίστει καὶ περὶ μελλόντων εὐλόγησεν Ἰσαὰκ τὸν Ἰακὼβ καὶ τὸν Ἠσαῦ.
21
πίστει Ἰακὼβ ἀποθνῄσκων ἕκαστον τῶν υἱῶν Ἰωσὴφ εὐλόγησεν, καὶ προσεκύνησεν ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον τῆς ῥάβδου αὐτοῦ.
22
πίστει Ἰωσὴφ τελευτῶν περὶ τῆς ἐξόδου τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐμνημόνευσεν, καὶ περὶ τῶν ὀστέων αὐτοῦ ἐνετείλατο.
23
Πίστει Μωϋσῆς γεννηθεὶς ἐκρύβη τρίμηνον ὑπὸ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, διότι εἶδον ἀστεῖον τὸ παιδίον καὶ οὐκ ἐφοβήθησαν τὸ διάταγμα τοῦ βασιλέως.
24
πίστει Μωϋσῆς μέγας γενόμενος ἠρνήσατο λέγεσθαι υἱὸς θυγατρὸς Φαραώ,
25
μᾶλλον ἑλόμενος συγκακουχεῖσθαι τῷ λαῷ τοῦ θεοῦ ἢ πρόσκαιρον ἔχειν ἁμαρτίας ἀπόλαυσιν,
26
μείζονα πλοῦτον ἡγησάμενος τῶν Αἰγύπτου θησαυρῶν τὸν ὀνειδισμὸν τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἀπέβλεπεν γὰρ εἰς τὴν μισθαποδοσίαν.
27
πίστει κατέλιπεν Αἴγυπτον, μὴ φοβηθεὶς τὸν θυμὸν τοῦ βασιλέως, τὸν γὰρ ἀόρατον ὡς ὁρῶν ἐκαρτέρησεν.
28
πίστει πεποίηκεν τὸ πάσχα καὶ τὴν πρόσχυσιν τοῦ αἵματος, ἵνα μὴ ὁ ὀλοθρεύων τὰ πρωτότοκα θίγῃ αὐτῶν.
29
Πίστει διέβησαν τὴν Ἐρυθρὰν Θάλασσαν ὡς διὰ ξηρᾶς γῆς, ἧς πεῖραν λαβόντες οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι κατεπόθησαν.
30
πίστει τὰ τείχη Ἰεριχὼ ἔπεσαν κυκλωθέντα ἐπὶ ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας.
31
πίστει Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη οὐ συναπώλετο τοῖς ἀπειθήσασιν, δεξαμένη τοὺς κατασκόπους μετ’ εἰρήνης.
32
Καὶ τί ἔτι λέγω; ἐπιλείψει με γὰρ διηγούμενον ὁ χρόνος περὶ Γεδεών, Βαράκ, Σαμψών, Ἰεφθάε, Δαυίδ τε καὶ Σαμουὴλ καὶ τῶν προφητῶν,
33
οἳ διὰ πίστεως κατηγωνίσαντο βασιλείας, εἰργάσαντο δικαιοσύνην, ἐπέτυχον ἐπαγγελιῶν, ἔφραξαν στόματα λεόντων,
34
ἔσβεσαν δύναμιν πυρός, ἔφυγον στόματα μαχαίρης, ἐδυναμώθησαν ἀπὸ ἀσθενείας, ἐγενήθησαν ἰσχυροὶ ἐν πολέμῳ, παρεμβολὰς ἔκλιναν ἀλλοτρίων·
35
ἔλαβον γυναῖκες ἐξ ἀναστάσεως τοὺς νεκροὺς αὐτῶν· ἄλλοι δὲ ἐτυμπανίσθησαν, οὐ προσδεξάμενοι τὴν ἀπολύτρωσιν, ἵνα κρείττονος ἀναστάσεως τύχωσιν·
36
ἕτεροι δὲ ἐμπαιγμῶν καὶ μαστίγων πεῖραν ἔλαβον, ἔτι δὲ δεσμῶν καὶ φυλακῆς·
37
ἐλιθάσθησαν, ἐπρίσθησαν, ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρης ἀπέθανον, περιῆλθον ἐν μηλωταῖς, ἐν αἰγείοις δέρμασιν, ὑστερούμενοι, θλιβόμενοι, κακουχούμενοι,

ὧν οὐκ ἦν ἄξιος ὁ κόσμος ἐπὶ ἐρημίαις πλανώμενοι καὶ ὄρεσι καὶ σπηλαίοις καὶ ταῖς ὀπαῖς τῆς γῆς·
39
καὶ πάντες μαρτυρηθέντες διὰ τῆς πίστεως οὐκ ἐκομίσαντο τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν,
40
τοῦ θεοῦ περὶ ἡμῶν κρεῖττόν τι προβλεψαμένου, ἵνα μὴ χωρὶς ἡμῶν τελειωθῶσιν.

C’est à cause de leur foi que les grands personnages du passé ont été approuvés par Dieu.

Par la foi, nous comprenons que l’univers a été formé par la parole de Dieu, de sorte que ce qui est visible a été fait à partir de ce qui est invisible.

Par la foi, Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice meilleur que celui de Caïn. Grâce à elle, il fut déclaré juste par Dieu, car Dieu lui-même approuva ses dons. Par sa foi, Abel parle encore, bien qu’il soit mort.

Par la foi, Hénok fut emmené auprès de Dieu sans avoir connu la mort. Personne ne put le retrouver, parce que Dieu l’avait enlevé auprès de lui. L’Écriture déclare qu’avant d’être enlevé, Hénok avait plu à Dieu.

Or, personne ne peut plaire à Dieu sans la foi. En effet, celui qui s’approche de Dieu doit croire que Dieu existe et qu’il récompense ceux qui le cherchent.

Par la foi, Noé écouta les avertissements de Dieu au sujet de ce qui allait se passer et qu’on ne voyait pas encore. Il prit Dieu au sérieux et construisit une arche dans laquelle il fut sauvé avec toute sa famille. Ainsi, il condamna le monde et obtint, grâce à sa foi, que Dieu le considère comme juste.

Par la foi, Abraham obéit quand Dieu l’appela : il partit pour un pays que Dieu allait lui donner en possession. Il partit sans savoir où il allait.

Par la foi, il vécut comme un étranger dans le pays que Dieu lui avait promis. Il habita sous la tente, ainsi qu’Isaac et Jacob, qui reçurent la même promesse de Dieu.

Car Abraham attendait la cité qui a de solides fondations, celle dont Dieu est l’architecte et le constructeur.

Par la foi, Abraham fut rendu capable d’être père, alors qu’il avait passé l’âge de l’être et que Sara elle-même était stérile. Il eut la certitude que Dieu tiendrait sa promesse.
12
C’est ainsi qu’à partir de ce seul homme, pourtant déjà marqué par la mort, naquirent des descendants nombreux comme les étoiles dans le ciel, innombrables comme les grains de sable au bord de la mer.
13
C’est dans la foi que tous ces hommes sont morts. Ils n’ont pas reçu les biens que Dieu avait promis, mais ils les ont vus et salués de loin. Ils ont ouvertement reconnu qu’ils étaient des étrangers et des exilés sur la terre.
14
Ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent clairement qu’ils recherchent une patrie.
15
S’ils avaient pensé avec regret au pays qu’ils avaient quitté, ils auraient eu l’occasion d’y retourner.
16
En réalité, ils désiraient une patrie meilleure, c’est-à-dire la patrie céleste. C’est pourquoi Dieu n’a pas honte d’être appelé leur Dieu ; en effet, il leur a préparé une cité.
17
Par la foi, Abraham offrit Isaac en sacrifice lorsque Dieu le mit à l’épreuve. Il se montra prêt à offrir son fils unique, alors qu’il avait reçu une promesse ;
18
Dieu lui avait dit : « C’est par Isaac que tu auras les descendants que je t’ai promis. »
19
Mais Abraham estima que Dieu avait le pouvoir de ramener Isaac d’entre les morts ; c’est pourquoi Dieu lui rendit son fils, et ce fait a une valeur symbolique.
20
Par la foi, Isaac donna à Jacob et à Ésaü une bénédiction qui se rapportait à leur avenir.
21
Par la foi, Jacob bénit chacun des fils de Joseph, peu avant de mourir ; il s’appuya sur l’extrémité de son bâton et adora Dieu.
22
Par la foi, Joseph, à la fin de sa vie, annonça que les Israélites sortiraient d’Égypte et indiqua ce que l’on devait faire de ses ossements.
23
Par la foi, les parents de Moïse le tinrent caché pendant trois mois après sa naissance. Ils virent que c’était un bel enfant et n’eurent pas peur de désobéir à l’ordre du roi.

Par la foi, Moïse, devenu grand, renonça au titre de fils de la fille du Pharaon.
25
Il préféra être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu plutôt que de jouir des plaisirs momentanés du péché.
26
Il estima qu’être méprisé comme le Messie avait beaucoup plus de valeur que les trésors de l’Égypte, car il gardait les yeux fixés sur la récompense future.
27
Par la foi, Moïse quitta l’Égypte, sans craindre la colère du roi ; il demeura ferme, comme s’il voyait le Dieu invisible.
28
Par la foi, il institua la Pâque et ordonna de répandre du sang sur les portes des maisons, afin que l’ange de la mort ne tue pas les fils premiers-nés des Israélites.
29
Par la foi, les Israélites traversèrent la mer Rouge comme si c’était une terre sèche ; mais lorsque les Égyptiens essayèrent d’en faire autant, ils furent noyés.
30
Par la foi, les murailles de Jéricho tombèrent, après que les Israélites en eurent fait le tour pendant sept jours.
31
Par la foi, Rahab, la prostituée, ne mourut pas avec ceux qui s’étaient opposés à Dieu, parce qu’elle avait accueilli les espions avec bienveillance.
32
Que dirai-je encore ? Le temps me manquerait pour parler de Gédéon, Barac, Samson, Jefté, David, Samuel, ainsi que des prophètes.

Grâce à la foi, ils vainquirent des royaumes, pratiquèrent la justice et obtinrent ce que Dieu avait promis. Ils fermèrent la gueule des lions,
34
éteignirent des feux violents, échappèrent à la mort par l’épée. Ils étaient faibles et devinrent forts ; ils furent redoutables à la guerre et repoussèrent des armées étrangères.
35
Par la foi, des femmes virent leurs morts se relever et leur être rendus. D’autres ont été torturés à mort ; ils refusèrent la délivrance, afin d’être relevés de la mort et de parvenir à une vie meilleure.
36
D’autres encore subirent les moqueries et le fouet, certains furent enchaînés et jetés en prison.
37

Le monde n’était pas digne de ces gens-là ! Ils erraient dans les déserts et les montagnes, ils vivaient dans les cavernes et les trous de la terre.

Ils ont tous été approuvés par Dieu à cause de leur foi ; pourtant, ils n’ont pas obtenu ce que Dieu avait promis.

En effet, Dieu avait prévu mieux encore pour nous et il n’a pas voulu qu’ils parviennent sans nous à la perfection.
