Cette exhortation est fondée sur la pensée que la responsabilité des chrétiens est plus redoutable encore que celle des Israélites, ainsi que le montre le contraste de Celui qui se révélait (grec avertissait divinement, Hébreux 8.5) sur la terre et de Celui qui se révèle du haut des cieux.
La présence terrible de Jéhova sur le Sinaï aurait pu, jusqu'à un certain point, excuser le peuple qui refusa de l'entendre. (Hébreux 12.19)
Mais quelle excuse auront ceux à qui Dieu se fait entendre de la céleste cité, et cela par Jésus le Médiateur, qui nous en a ouvert l'accès, après avoir tout accompli pour notre salut ?
Il ne faut pas traduire, comme nos anciennes versions : "Prenez garde de mépriser Celui qui parle ; car si ceux qui méprisèrent..." Ce ne fut pas par mépris, en effet, qu'Israël refusa d'entendre Dieu ; (Hébreux 12.19) ce fut au contraire par crainte, mais par une crainte servile, qui provenait de son incrédulité.
Or, l'auteur emploie le même verbe qu'à Hébreux 12.19 : prier, supplier, mais supplier dans une intention négative, pour qu'une chose ne soit pas, ce que nous rendons dans le texte par refuser.
La plupart de ceux qui ferment leur cœur à l'Evangile de Jésus Christ le font, non parce qu'ils le méprisent, mais au contraire parce que l'Evangile leur paraît trop élevé, trop saint, et qu'il exige d'eux le sacrifice du cœur et de la vie.
