La pensée que Christ a paru une seule fois pour l'abolition du péché par le sacrifice de lui-même (Hébreux 9.26) oblige l'auteur à parler de sa seconde apparition, pour bien marquer que, lors de celle-ci, n'y aura plus de sacrifice.

Il voit, entre cette double apparition de Christ et la destinée de tous les hommes auxquels il est réservé de mourir une fois, pour être jugés après cela, plus qu'une simple analogie. Ce dernier fait permet d'apprécier le premier et d'en estimer le caractère.

Pourquoi est-il réservé à tous les hommes de mourir ? A cause du péché et de la condamnation qu'il entraîne (Genèse 2.17 ; 3.19 ; Romains 5.12, note.) Cette mort a lieu une seule fois, c'est-à-dire une fois pour toutes. Elle clôt définitivement le temps de l'épreuve ; quand elle est intervenue nous n'avons plus qu'à "comparaître devant le tribunal de Christ, afin que chacun reçoive selon qu'il aura fait soit bien soit mal, étant dans son corps." (2Corinthiens 5.10)

Notre texte, très concis, porte ces seuls mots : après cela, jugement.

De cette condition commune à tous les hommes, ressort avec évidence le but de la double apparition du Sauveur. Parce que la mort est réservée à tous, parce que tous doivent comparaître en jugement, lui, le représentant de notre humanité, le second Adam, le souverain sacrificateur, a voulu, dans son insondable amour, subir la mort, le jugement. Il a été offert une seule fois comme victime ; pourquoi ? pour porter les péchés de plusieurs. (Matthieu 20.28 ; 26.28)

Tous ces termes sont à dessein empruntés aux usages des sacrifices. En imposant les mains sur la tête de la victime, le sacrificateur y déposait les péchés du peuple ; (Lévitique 4.4,15,20,29,33) de là, l'expression si usitée dans l'Ancien Testament : porter le péché, l'iniquité, le châtiment. (Nombres 14.34 ; Ezéchiel 4.6 ; 18.19, etc.) Et c'est ce terme même que l'auteur applique ici à Jésus, exactement comme Esaïe 53.12 ; 1Pierre 2.24. Comparer Jean 1.29.

Christ a été offert une seule fois, parce que l'homme aussi ne meurt qu'une fois et que dans cette unique mort se concentre tout le châtiment du péché qui est tombé sur le Sauveur. Aussi, à sa seconde venue, Christ n'aura plus à mourir pour achever la rédemption de l'humanité. Il viendra pour exercer le jugement, ce jugement qui est tout ce qui attend l'homme après la mort, (Hébreux 9.27) c'est ce que l'auteur veut dire quand il déclare que Christ paraîtra une seconde fois sans péché, sans avoir encore à porter les péchés des hommes.

Qu'il ait été ici-bas sans péché personnel, c'est ce que l'auteur a hautement proclamé, (Hébreux 4.15) mais il n'était pas sans péché dans le sens qui vient d'être exposé, puisqu'il avait pris sur lui le péché de l'humanité, en vertu duquel il souffrit et mourut. Or à sa seconde venue, il n'aura plus ni péché à expier ni sacrifice à accomplir ; il apparaîtra comme le Roi glorieux à ceux qui l'attendent pour leur salut (grec à salut).

- On peut aussi rattacher les derniers mots au verbe principal : "paraîtra à salut, pour apporter le salut à ceux qui l'attendent."
