Voici, au contraire, un homme qui scrute la *loi parfaite qui donne la liberté, il lui demeure fidèlement attaché et, au lieu de l’oublier après l’avoir entendue, il y conforme ses actes : cet homme sera heureux dans tout ce qu’il fait.
En revanche, il y a celui qui examine attentivement la loi parfaite qui nous procure la liberté, et il s’y attache fidèlement ; il ne se contente pas de l’écouter pour l’oublier ensuite, mais il la met en pratique. Eh bien, celui-là sera béni dans tout ce qu’il fait.

Les traits de ce tableau sont exactement opposés à ceux du précédent.

Au lieu d'un simple regard jeté sur le miroir, on voit ici un homme courbé sur la loi parfaite (traduction littérale), afin de la considérer longtemps et jusqu'au fond, (comparez 1Pierre 1.12, où se trouve le même mot dans le texte Grec) au lieu de s'en aller, il persévère dans cette étude ; au lieu de se conduire en auditeur oublieux, il devient un observateur actif du commandement, (grec) un faiseur d'œuvres. (verset 22, note.) Ce qu'il voit se transforme immédiatement en action dans sa vie de chaque jour.

Jacques déclare qu'un tel homme sera heureux dans son obéissance. (L'original renferme ce jeu de mots : acteur de l'œuvre, il sera heureux dans son action.) Tout chrétien le comprend !

- Ce que Jacques avait appelé auparavant "la Parole de vérité" (verset 18) "la Parole plantée au dedans de l'homme, et pouvant sauver les âmes," (verset 21) il le nomme ici la loi parfaite, celle de la liberté. Il entend par là l'Evangile pris dans son entier, lequel est à la fois une puissance divine qui nous rend libres de toute servitude, de toute condamnation de toute crainte, et une loi qui nous lie à l'obéissance par l'amour ; en d'autres termes, une loi qui, au lieu de dominer l'homme de l'extérieur, devient pour celui qui y persévère, qui identifie sa volonté avec ce qu'elle commande un moyen d'affranchissement, le principe intime en même temps que la norme de son activité. (Jérémie 31.31-34) Dès lors, c'est une loi parfaite, car en elle-même, elle ne laisse rien à désirer, (Matthieu 5.17) et elle communique à l'homme la force de l'accomplir.

L'expression de loi de la liberté montre combien Jacques était loin de se replacer au point de vue de l'ancienne Alliance et d'être en contradiction avec Paul. Paul, il est vrai, accuse la différence des deux alliances, en opposant la foi aux œuvres de la loi, comme moyen de justification, tandis que Jacques, concevant l'Evangile comme la loi parfaite, mais comme une loi intérieure, la loi de la liberté, la loi qui affranchit l'homme et le rend capable d'une joyeuse et victorieuse obéissance, présente les deux économies dans leur unité profonde.

Paul du reste parle lui aussi d'une "loi de la foi," (Romains 3.27) d'une "loi de l'Esprit de vie" (Romains 8,2 ; comparez verset 4), d'une "loi de Christ." (Galates 6.2)
