La foi, si elle n'a pas d'œuvres, est sans puissance de vie, elle est morte en elle-même, dans son principe, et non seulement quant à ses effets. (verset 17)

C'est pourquoi quelqu'un dira avec raison...(verset 18)

Ce quelqu'un n'est pas l'adversaire que Jacques réfute, puisqu'il représente les mêmes idées. La plupart des exégètes voient en lui un tiers que l'auteur fait intervenir pour dramatiser la discussion. Ce nouvel interlocuteur vient en aide à Jacques. Il montre que la foi sans œuvres n'est pas seulement inutile, (verset 14) mais indémontrable. Ce qui fait douter de la légitimité de cette interprétation, c'est d'une part que l'intervention de ce troisième personnage n'est pas clairement indiquée dans le texte, et d'autre part que la formule : mais dira quelqu'un, est toujours destinée à amener une objection à la thèse de l'auteur. (1Corinthiens 15.35)

Pour ces raisons, on propose de considérer les mots : tu as la foi, comme une question ironique de l'adversaire qui dirait à Jacques : As-tu vraiment la foi, toi qui ne lui attribues aucune valeur en elle-même ? A quoi Jacques répondrait : Moi, j'ai les œuvres. Montre-moi ta foi...(von Soden.) Cette explication fait violence à la phrase grecque. Les deux membres de celle-ci ne peuvent être séparés, comme le montre la conjonction : "et moi j'ai les œuvres."

Devant l'impossibilité de donner un sens satisfaisant au texte, on a supposé qu'un copiste aurait par inadvertance interverti les termes. L'auteur aurait écrit : "Mais dira quelqu'un : Toi tu as les œuvres ? et moi j'ai la foi." A quoi, Jacques aurait répliqué : "Montre-moi," etc. (Pfleiderer.) On a recouru aussi à l'hypothèse d'une lacune. Après les mots : Mais dira quelqu'un, le texte aurait porté primitivement l'objection de l'adversaire, à laquelle Jacques répondrait : "Tu as la foi et moi j'ai les œuvres," etc. (Spitta.)

Enfin, l'on pourrait admettre que la formule : "Mais dira quelqu'un," ne faisait pas partie du texte. Elle y aurait été introduite par un lecteur qui n'avait pas saisi la suite des pensées dans ce morceau. Mais ces conjectures, qui ne trouvent aucun appui dans les anciens documents, sont fort hasardées.

Le texte reçu porte ici : "Montre moi ta foi par tes œuvres." La variante adoptée d'après Sin., B. A, C, peut seule rendre la pensée de Jacques. Voici le sens complet de ce verset : Tu as la prétention d'avoir la foi ; montre-moi donc ta prétendue foi sans les œuvres ! Si tu es embarrassé pour répondre à cette demande, moi je te montrerai au contraire la foi (Sin., B. C), la vraie foi (et non ma foi, selon A, majuscules, versions.), par les fruits qu'elle produit nécessairement, et qui en sont les seuls signes certains, c'est-à-dire par mes œuvres.
