La vraie sagesse vient d'en haut, (comparez verset 17) elle est un don par lequel Dieu répond à la prière ; (Jacques 1.5) la fausse sagesse, dont se vante l'homme naturel, est de ce monde, où règnent les ténèbres et le péché ; elle est terrestre.

Jacques l'appelle encore animale (littér. psychique), provenant des forces naturelles de l'âme, dénuée de l'esprit de Dieu, (1Corinthiens 2.14) croissant sur le sol naturel du moi humain, dans son éloignement de Dieu. (Comparer 1Thessaloniciens 5.23, note.)

Enfin, aux yeux de l'apôtre, elle est diabolique c'est-à-dire inspirée à l'homme par les influences du prince des ténèbres. (Comparer verset 6)
