Voici, nous tenons pour bienheureux ceux qui ont souffert ; vous avez appris [quelle a été] la patience de Job, et vous avez vu la fin du Seigneur ; car le Seigneur est plein de compassion, et pitoyable.

World English Bible Behold, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Ceux qui ont enduré avec patience, (grec persévéré, patienté jusqu'à la fin), nous les déclarons bienheureux, et cela sur l'autorité du Seigneur lui-même. (Matthieu 24.13 ; Luc 8.15)

- Le texte reçu a ce verbe au présent : "ceux qui persévèrent."

La leçon de Sin., B. A, que nous avons admise est plus en harmonie avec la pensée de l'apôtre, qui parle des hommes de Dieu de l'Ancien Testament.

Job 1.21 ; Ezéchiel 14.14,20.

Grec : la fin du Seigneur. Il s'agit de l'heureuse issue que l'Eternel fit trouver à Job dans ses épreuves. (Job 42)

Quelques interprètes ont admis que Jacques parlait de la fin du Seigneur Jésus lui même, de ses souffrances et de sa mort suivies de sa gloire. Il aurait voulu rappeler ce grand exemple de patience dans l'épreuve, après ceux des saints hommes de Dieu qu'il a cités. (Voir 1Pierre 2.21 et suivants)

Ce sens ne s'accorde ni avec le caractère général de l'épître, qui ne fait aucune allusion aux faits de la vie de Jésus, ni avec la dernière pensée du verset : car le Seigneur est plein de compassion. Si l'auteur avait voulu citer la patience de Jésus à souffrir, il n'aurait pu lui donner comme motif la compassion de celui-ci ; ce motif se comprend mieux de Dieu délivrant Job.
