Jean ne dit pas comment Jésus trouva, se procura cet ânon ; il suppose le fait connu d'après les premiers évangiles. (Matthieu 21.2 et suivants)

Quant à la prophétie de Zacharie 9.9, l'évangéliste ne fait que la rappeler en l'abrégeant, afin d'en montrer l'accomplissement dans les faits qu'il raconte. (Voir, sur cette citation, Matthieu 21.5, note.)

Aux paroles triomphantes du prophète : "Tressaille de joie, fille de Sion," Jean substitue un simple : Ne crains point, parce qu'à ses yeux l'humble monture du Sauveur marque surtout le caractère doux et paisible de son règne.

Il y a même dans le texte un gracieux diminutif : petit ânon, opposé, dit Bengel, au cheval de guerre dont Jésus n'a pas voulu se servir.
