Jean 12.16

Au premier abord, les disciples ne comprirent ni le sens symbolique de cette entrée royale sous un appareil si humble, ni le rapport de cet événement avec la prophétie, mais après que Jésus fut glorifié et qu'eux-mêmes furent remplis de l'Esprit de lumière, alors ils se souvinrent et comprirent.

- Les derniers mots : qu'on les lui avait faites (grec qu'ils les lui avaient faites) pourraient se rapporter aux disciples eux mêmes et rappeler que c'étaient ceux-ci qui avaient procuré à Jésus son humble monture et l'avaient fait asseoir dessus.

Telle est la pensée de plusieurs exégètes (Meyer, Holtzmann, Godet).

Mais comme le fait remarquer M. Weiss, ce n'était là qu'un incident secondaire dont Jean ne parle pas ; il est donc plus naturel de considérer la grande foule (verset 12) comme sujet sous-entendu de ce verbe et de rapporter celui-ci aux acclamations dont Jésus venait d'être l'objet.

C'était là le fait important de la journée, c'était son peuple qui avait fait ces choses à Jésus et les disciples s'en souvinrent avec bonheur, quand ils eurent compris la royauté éternelle de leur Maître.
