World English Bible "He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, and would turn, and I would heal them."

Esaïe 6.10. Voir sur cette citation : Matthieu 13.14,15, note. Ce qui, dans l'hébreu est un ordre de Dieu au prophète, est rendu par l'évangéliste comme une action de Dieu lui-même qui, par un juste jugement sur l'incrédulité de son peuple, a aveuglé leurs yeux et endurci leur cœur ; c'était, en effet, alors un fait accompli.

Jean tire de là cette conclusion : Grec : C'est pourquoi ils ne pouvaient croire. Le c'est pourquoi porte sur le parce que suivant : (comme Jean 5.18 ; 10.17) Ils ne pouvaient croire pour cette raison que...

Le dessein de Dieu, en envoyant son Fils au monde, était non d'endurcir et de perdre les hommes, mais de les sauver et Jésus avait abondamment offert à tous la grâce et le salut. Aussi le jugement de Dieu, ici révélé, ne commence que là où sa miséricorde rencontre une incrédulité et un endurcissement sans espoir.

Il faut donc dire avec Bengel : "Avant tout, ils ne croient pas, étant rebelles ; puis, ils ne peuvent croire. Ils se trompent donc, ceux qui renversent ainsi l'ordre de ces paroles : ils n'ont pu croire, donc ils n'ont pas cru."
