En conformité avec toutes les Ecritures, Jean n'hésite pas à nous montrer, dans l'Adonaï qui apparut au prophète, la Parole éternelle par laquelle curent lieu toutes les révélations divines de l'ancienne Alliance et qui est devenue chair en JésusChrist. (Comparer Jean 1.1, notes.)
Les mots : il parla de lui, se rapportent précisément aux paroles du prophète que Jean vient de citer et qui se trouvent à la suite de la vision ici rappelée. (Esaïe 6.8 et suivants)
- Une variante de Sin., B, A adoptée par la plupart des éditeurs et par plusieurs exégètes (Meyer, Luthardt, Weiss), porte : parce qu'il vit sa gloire, au lieu de lorsqu'il vit sa gloire. Dans ce cas, l'évangéliste indiquerait que la vision du prophète fut la cause ou le fondement des paroles qu'il prononce.
Mais, comme les anciennes versions latine et syriaque sont favorables au mot lorsque et que celui-ci, d'un emploi plus rare, a pu être changé en parce que, plutôt que l'inverse, nous préférons, avec M. Godet, la leçon reçue qui donne un sens plus naturel et plus conforme au contexte.
