Jean nomme avec une intention marquée tous ceux qui coopérèrent à l'arrestation de Jésus : la cohorte, le tribun, les huissiers, puis il ajoute (grec) : prirent ensemble Jésus et le lièrent.

M. Luthardt fait observer que cette expression peint l'effet de la terreur que tous ces gens venaient d'éprouver ; (verset 6) ils croient devoir réunir toutes leurs forces pour s'assurer d'un seul homme ; et, en outre, ils le lient. Jésus lié est resté dans le souvenir de son Eglise comme l'image touchante du sacrifice complet de la volonté.

      22 So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, "Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me."
