Il devait ressusciter : "Nécessité divine," comme s'exprime Meyer. (Comparer Luc 24.26)

Comme Thomas, (verset 25) les deux disciples eurent besoin de voir pour croire.

Jean marque en s'humiliant la cause de leur lenteur à croire : ils ne comprenaient pas encore, même alors, l'Ecriture qui dit que Jésus devait ressusciter d'entre les morts.

En effet, ils auraient pu trouver la résurrection du Sauveur annoncée dans des passages tels que Psaumes 16 ; Psaumes 22 ; Psaumes 110 ; Esaïe 53 etc.

Les enseignements de Jésus (Luc 24.25-27,45) et surtout la lumière du Saint-Esprit ouvrirent les yeux des apôtres sur ce point, comme sur tant d'autres. Alors ils comprirent les Ecritures. (Actes 2.25,34 ; 8.32,33 ; 13.33,35)

- Outre les révélations de l'Ancien Testament, les disciples avaient entendu les déclarations claires et nombreuses de Jésus sur sa mort et sa résurrection. (Matthieu 16.21,Luc 18.31 et suivants, et ailleurs.)

On est donc étonné que l'évangéliste ne les mentionne point ici, et la critique négative n'a pas manqué d'en inférer que ces prédictions avaient été inventées après l'événement.

Mais les évangélistes euxmêmes nous ont appris, avec une candeur et une humilité inimitables, que les disciples n'avaient pas mieux compris ces prédictions de Jésus que les Ecritures. (Luc 18.34 et surtout Marc 9.10)

Ils les entendaient dans un sens figuré parce que, selon leurs préjugés messianiques, les souffrances et la mort de Jésus leur paraissaient impossibles et sa résurrection un événement tellement inouï, que jamais il n'avait pénétré dans leur esprit.
