Le sanhédrin était assemblé pour recevoir le prisonnier que les huissiers devaient amener.

Ce sont les pharisiens, les rigoureux gardiens de l'orthodoxie, qui prennent la parole, ils citent les hommes de leur parti comme les seuls modèles que les huissiers auraient dû imiter.

Aveuglés par leur orgueil, ils prétendent qu'aucun des chefs ni des pharisiens n'avait cru en Jésus.

Il y avait pourtant, présent à la séance, un pharisien qui allait leur prouver le contraire. (verset 50, comparez Jean 12.42)
