Le pays de Canaan devait être réparti entre les différentes tribus d'Israël. Dieu désire que chaque individu soit bien conscient de ce qui lui appartient, sans chercher à empiéter sur les possessions de son voisin. Le monde doit être gouverné, non par la force, mais par la droiture et la justice.

Quel que soit le lieu où nous habitons, et la part qui nous est allouée, nous devons considérer que tout nous est donné par Dieu; nous devrions en effet, être reconnaissants pour Ses dons et les utiliser, en gardant cette pensée à l'esprit ; nous devrions également rester très prudents dans nos relations avec nos voisins, de façon à éviter toute dispute concernant nos propriétés respectives, à la fois pour le présent, comme pour le futur.

Josué était en quelque sorte une image de Christ, Celui qui a non seulement fermé les portes de l'enfer pour nous, mais qui nous a aussi ouvert celles des cieux, ayant ainsi procuré aux croyants, un héritage éternel. Nous avons dans ce passage, une description générale des régions du pays, distribuées aux deux tribus de Ruben et Gad et à la demi tribu de Manassé, selon ce qu'avait précédemment institué Moïse. Israël devait connaître les limites du pays qu'il allait posséder, et veiller à les garder ; il ne devait pas, sous prétexte qu'il était le peuple de Dieu, empiéter sur les territoires de ses voisins. Ce chapitre mentionne deux fois que pour la tribu de Lévi, Moïse n'avait donné aucun héritage : voir Nombres 18:20. Les autres tribus devaient subvenir à la subsistance des Lévites.

Les serviteurs de Dieu ne devraient montrer aucun intérêt pour les biens de ce monde, les membres de l'assemblée veillant à ce que rien ne leur manque. Heureux ceux qui ont comme héritage l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël : les richesses de ce monde n'auront alors que peu d'attrait pour eux. La Providence divine saura subvenir à leurs besoins, l'Esprit saint saura consoler leur âme, jusqu'à ce qu'ils parviennent à la joie et aux plaisirs éternels, qui les attendent dans les cieux !

      54 To the more you shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give the less inheritance: to everyone according to those who were numbered of him shall his inheritance be given.
      55 Notwithstanding, the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.

      11 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
      12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed Yahweh completely.'
      13 Yahweh's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of Yahweh, was consumed.
      14 "Behold, you have risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.

      Ezéchiel 48

      23 As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west side, Benjamin, one [portion].
      24 By the border of Benjamin, from the east side to the west side, Simeon, one [portion].
      25 By the border of Simeon, from the east side to the west side, Issachar, one [portion].
