On savait, par de nombreuses citations des Pères de l'Église, qu'il existait dans les premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne un livre apocryphe portant le nom d'Hénoch.

En 1773, Bruce rapporta d'Abyssinie trois manuscrits d'une traduction éthiopienne de cet ouvrage. Une traduction anglaise, par Laurence, parut en 1821, et le même savant publia en 1838 le texte éthiopien.

D'autres traductions en ont été données, en français par Sylvestre de Sacy, en allemand par Hoffmann, puis par Dillmann. Dans l'hiver de 1886 à 1887 le texte grec des 32 premiers chapitres du livre fut trouvé dans un tombeau de la Haute-Egypte et publié en 1892 par Bouriant.

La plupart des savants modernes contestent que le livre entier soit l'œuvre d'un même auteur. Ses parties principales remontent au second siècle avant Jésus Christ.

Quant aux chapitres 36-71, la plupart les placent avant notre ère, tandis que d'autres leur donnent pour auteur un chrétien. L'ensemble de l'ouvrage est d'origine palestinienne. Il a été, de l'avis de la plupart, composé en hébreu ou en araméen. Il contient une longue suite de révélations et de visions eschatologiques où domine l'idée du jugement dernier, qui sera exercé par le Messie.

On trouve littéralement, au chapitre 1 : 9, la prophétie citée par Jude. (Comparer Schürer, Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes, 3e édit., III, p. 190-203. - Beer, introduction et traduction allemande, dans la collection de Kautzsch Pseudepigraphen des Alten Testaments p. 217 et suivants)
