Il n'y avait pas de roi. L'auteur veut dire qu'un fait pareil n'aurait pu se produire sous le gouvernement d'un roi.

Séjournant : le mot hébreu indique que le lévite vivait là, comme en passant, en dehors d'une ville lévitique.

La partie la plus reculée : la plus septentrionale.

Prit pour concubine : il la prit sans avoir accompli les formalités accoutumées, fiançailles, paiement aux parents d'une somme d'argent, cadeaux, etc. Si elle avait été sa femme par droit de mariage, la loi de Deutéronome 24.2-4 ne lui aurait pas permis de la reprendre comme il le fit, après l'infidélité qui les avait séparés (verset 2).

La méchanceté des hommes de Guibea.

- Les trois derniers chapitres du livre des Juges relatent une bien triste histoire, démontrant la méchanceté des hommes de Guibea, dans le territoire de Benjamin.

L'Éternel, qui est la Droiture même, permet parfois aux pécheurs d'exécuter une juste vengeance envers les autres ; si la scène décrite dans ce passage est horrible, elle n'a cependant aucune commune mesure avec celle qui aura lieu au jour du jugement dernier ! Que chacun puisse considérer les voies qui permettront d'échapper à la colère divine à venir : mortifier le péché qui réside en nos cœurs, résister aux tentations de Satan et éviter toutes les pollutions qui sont ici-bas.
