Chose très sainte. Ainsi sont qualifiées les offrandes qui entrent dans un contact immédiat avec Dieu et qui acquièrent par là une sainteté supérieure. Ce sont les pains de proposition (24.9) et le parfum (Exode 30.36), qui appartenaient en quelque sorte au sanctuaire lui-même ; puis les victimes des sacrifices pour le péché et de réparation (6.25,29 ; 7.1,6 ; 10.17 ; 14.13 ; Nombres 18.9), qui étaient immolées près de l'autel (1.11 ; 14.13) ; enfin l'oblation, dont une partie paraissait sur l'autel (2.3,10 ; 6.10 ; 10.12).

Sans doute, l'holocauste était aussi une chose très sainte ; mais cela n'est pas indiqué, parce qu'il n'était point nécessaire de faire ressortir cette qualité à l'égard d'une victime qui, étant brûlée tout entière, n'était exposée à aucune profanation.

Remarquons encore que les choses très saintes ne pouvaient être mangées que par des sacrificateurs, à l'exclusion de leurs femmes, et cela en lieu saint (dans le parvis) et en état de pureté. De plus, les oblations qui accompagnaient les sacrifices très saints devaient être sans levain, tandis que le levain et le miel étaient admis pour les oblations de prémices (2.12).

Simplement saintes sont les offrandes qui n'entrent pas en contact aussi direct avec Dieu : les sacrifices d'actions de grâces (7.31 ; 10.14-15 ; 23.20 ; Nombres 6.20 ; Exode 29.27-28) ; les premiers-nés du bétail (Nombres 18.15 etc) ; les prémices (Nombres 18.12-13) ; les dîmes (Nombres 18.26 ; 27.30) ; enfin ce qui avait été voué (Nombres 18.14). Aucun de ces dons ne pénétrait jusque dans le sanctuaire, ni même, abstraction faite du sang et de la graisse des sacrifices d'actions de grâces et des premiers-nés, jusque sur l'autel. Tous les descendants d'Aaron, hommes et femmes, pouvaient manger des choses simplement désignées comme saintes (10.14 ; 22.10 ; Nombres 18.11,19), à la condition d'être en état de pureté (22.3, etc.), et que ce fût en lieu pur (10.14).
