Un homme frauderait-il Dieu ? Ces mots pourraient signifier : Réussira-t-il à le tromper ? Mais il est plus naturel d'expliquer ainsi : Qu'un homme ose frauder son prochain, cela se comprend, puisqu'il n'est pas sûr d'être découvert ; mais tromper Dieu qui voit tout !

La dîme : destinée à l'entretien des prêtres, d'après Lévitique 27.30 ; Nombres 18.20-21. Le peuple, d'après Néhémie chapitres 10 à 12, s'acquittait avec si peu de conscience de ce devoir que plusieurs Lévites durent quitter le service du temple pour se vouer à l'agriculture.

La part à prélever : la portion des victimes offertes revenant aux sacrificateurs, qui avait peu de prix quand les victimes étaient mauvaises (comparez 1.7).

      16 He shall make restitution for that which he has done wrong in the holy thing, and shall add a fifth part to it, and give it to the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and he will be forgiven.

      30 "'All the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is Yahweh's. It is holy to Yahweh.
      31 If a man redeems anything of his tithe, he shall add a fifth part to it.
      32 All the tithe of the herds or the flocks, whatever passes under the rod, the tenth shall be holy to Yahweh.
      33 He shall not search whether it is good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he changes it at all, then both it and that for which it is changed shall be holy. It shall not be redeemed.'"
      34 These are the commandments which Yahweh commanded Moses for the children of Israel on Mount Sinai.

      27 Your wave offering shall be reckoned to you, as though it were the grain of the threshing floor, and as the fullness of the winepress.
      28 Thus you also shall offer a wave offering to Yahweh of all your tithes, which you receive of the children of Israel; and of it you shall give Yahweh's wave offering to Aaron the priest.
      29 Out of all your gifts you shall offer every wave offering of Yahweh, of all its best, even the holy part of it out of it.'
      30 "Therefore you shall tell them, 'When you heave its best from it, then it shall be reckoned to the Levites as the increase of the threshing floor, and as the increase of the winepress.
      31 You shall eat it in every place, you and your households: for it is your reward in return for your service in the Tent of Meeting.
      32 You shall bear no sin by reason of it, when you have heaved from it its best: and you shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, that you not die.'"
