Ce verset indique la raison pour laquelle Jésus appelle cette génération "méchante et adultère."

Le nom de Jonas qu'il vient de prononcer a évoqué devant lui le souvenir des Ninivites repentants, qui forment un frappant contraste avec cette génération sourde à ses appels.

- Le verbe ici traduit par se lèveront, se lèvera (grec se relèveront, ou se réveilleront) est le même qui signifie aussi ressusciter, et rien n'empêche de traduire ainsi.

C'est ce que fait M. Rilliet. En tout cas, il ne faut pas traduire : se lèveront contre, mais avec ; le terme de l'original exprimant la simultanéité de leur apparition en jugement avec cette génération qui sera condamnée par le seul contraste que son incrédulité présentera avec la repentance de Ninive et la foi de la reine de Séba.

- Il y a ici plus que Jonas, plus que Salomon. (Comparer verset 6) En s'exprimant ainsi, Jésus fait voir qu'il a clairement conscience de sa dignité surhumaine, car autrement il manquerait de modestie ; et en même temps, il rend plus accablant le parallèle qu'il établit entre cette génération et les Ninivites ou la reine du Midi.
