Bien que Christ ait ici parlé avec autorité, peu de personnes, parmi les gens aisés, ne plaçaient pas leur confiance en leurs richesses.

Bien rares sont les pauvres qui n’envient pas la fortune ! Toute l’énergie que les hommes dépensent, en vue d’être riches, ne contribue en fait qu’à les éloigner du ciel, eux et leurs enfants.

Quelle satisfaction, pour ceux qui sont de condition modeste, de ne pas être exposés aux tentations que peut susciter une position élevée et prospère ! S'ils vivent plus difficilement que les riches ici-bas, et s’ils aspirent volontiers à un monde meilleur, ils n'ont en fait aucune raison de se plaindre : les paroles de Jésus, dans ce texte, annoncent qu'il est difficile pour un riche, d'être un bon chrétien et d'être sauvé.

Le chemin du ciel est pour chacun, un chemin étroit ; la porte qui y conduit l’est également, en particulier pour les gens riches. Pour ces derniers, différents devoirs les attendent, ils sont de plus facilement tentés par de nombreux péchés. Il est difficile de ne pas être séduit par ce monde et par son attrait trompeur.

Les gens riches ont beaucoup à faire pour se réconcilier avec ceux qu’ils ont pu escroquer ! Il est vraiment impossible pour celui qui se confie entièrement en sa richesse, de parvenir au ciel : Christ utilisa à ce sujet, l’image du chameau, tentant d’entrer par le trou d’une aiguille, dénotant ainsi cette difficulté totalement insurmontable par l'homme. Seule la Grâce toute-puissante de Dieu permettra à un homme riche de franchir cette difficulté.

En fait, qui peut être sauvé ? Si la fortune est une entrave au salut des riches, ne risque-t-on pas de trouver une certaine fierté, voire une convoitise coupable, chez les plus démunis, avec tout le danger que cela peut comporter ? « Qui donc, peut être sauvé » ? Demandèrent les disciples. Personne, répondit Jésus, par aucun pouvoir ici-bas. Le début, la progression, et l’accomplissement de l'œuvre du salut, dépendent entièrement du Dieu Tout-Puissant, à qui toutes choses sont possibles. Les gens riches ne peuvent pas être sauvés au sein de leur mondanité, ils doivent, par contre, être sauvés de l’emprise de ce monde.

Pierre s’exclama : « nous avons tout quitté ». En fait, ce « tout » ne représentait que peu de choses : quelques bateaux munis de filets ! Nous pouvons observer cependant, que l’apôtre souligne indirectement la très grande importance qu’ont pour lui ces éléments. Nous sommes trop prompts à faire valoir aux yeux du Seigneur, nos services, nos épreuves, nos dépenses et nos pertes éventuelles. Christ, cependant, ne fit aucun reproche aux disciples ; bien que ce qu'ils avaient abandonné ne représentait que peu de choses, c'était quand même tout leur bien : c’était donc aussi cher, à leurs yeux, qu’un trésor ! Christ considéra avec bonté qu'ils ont en fait laissé tout leur « matériel » pour Le suivre ; Jésus accepte l’homme tel qu’il est...

Notre Seigneur fit ensuite une promesse aux apôtres : lorsque le Fils de l'homme s'assiéra sur le trône de Sa Gloire, Il fera toutes choses nouvelles, et les disciples s'assiéront avec Lui, afin d’exprimer leur jugement sur ceux qui auront imposé leur doctrine ici-bas. Cette parole de Jésus définit l'honneur, la dignité, l'autorité de la fonction et du ministère de Ses disciples.

Notre Seigneur ajouta que tous ceux qui abandonnent ce qu’ils possédaient (leur confort), pour Sa cause et celle de l'évangile, seront finalement récompensés.

Puisse Dieu nous donner la foi de placer notre espérance sur Ses Promesses ; alors nous serons prêts pour tout service ou sacrifice spirituels.

Notre Sauveur, dans le dernier verset de ce texte, souligne une erreur fréquemment commise par quelques-uns : l'héritage céleste n'est pas donné comme celui qui l’est ici-bas ; il est octroyé selon la volonté de Dieu !

Ne jugeons pas sur des apparences trompeuses ou des affirmations flatteuses : plusieurs peuvent, autant que nous sachions, devenir des « grands » dans la foi et dans la sainteté !
