Pilate (Sin., B ne portent pas ici le surnom de Ponce que le texte reçu ajoute à Pilate) gouvernait la Judée et la Samarie avec le titre de gouverneur, qui se trouve dans Josèphe. (Ant. XVIII, 3, 1.)

Il fut le cinquième procurateur de Judée et succéda à Valerius Gratus en 26 après Jésus-Christ. Après dix ans, il fut rappelé à Rome pour rendre compte de son administration, et relégué à Vienne, dans les Gaules. Les procurateurs résidaient à Césarée, capitale politique du pays (Actes 23.32 et suivants ; Actes 25.1 et suivants) ; mais Pilate était venu à Jérusalem probablement pour surveiller cette ville pendant la fête de Pâque, où l'on pouvait toujours craindre quelque trouble à cause des immenses multitudes qui y affluaient.
