Le peuple de Dieu ne se borne pas à repousser les attaques de l'ennemi ; il le poursuit jusque dans son pays et en fait la conquête : Assur lui est asservi.

Ils paîtront (gouverneront)... avec l'épée : comparez Psaumes 2.9.

La terre de Nimrod : parallèle de la terre d'Assur. L'Assyrie est ici nommée le pays de Nimrod, parce que celui-ci fut le fondateur de la première monarchie universelle (Babel), dont la puissance assyrienne fut l'une des branches (Genèse 10.9-11). Le nom de Nimrod représente mieux qu'aucun autre la puissance terrestre dans son opposition au règne de Dieu.

Les portes désignent non les frontières d'Assur, mais les villes et forteresses qui sont le cœur même du pays.
