Ayons une entrevue. Ils n'ont rien pu par la force ; ils ont recours à la ruse et à l'intimidation. Ils se donnent pour des employés intègres, désireux de sauvegarder les droits de leur souverain ; mais si Néhémie veut s'approcher d'eux, ils emploieront leur crédit auprès du roi pour présenter son cas sous le jour le plus favorable (verset 8).
Dans les villages. Pour que leur proposition n'ait pas l'air de cacher un piège, ils laissent à Néhémie le soin de fixer l'endroit du rendez-vous.
Dans la vallée d'Ono. Ono est toujours indiqué à côté de Lod ou Lydde (1Chroniques 8.12 ; Esdras 2.33 ; Néhémie 7.37 ; 11.35) et d'après Eusèbe, était dans le voisinage immédiat de cette ville bien connue de la tribu de Benjamin. Là, à près de 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Jérusalem, la position de Néhémie eût été bien critique.
Quatre fois : coup sur coup, car il semble que ceci se passe avant l'achèvement des murs.
