Deux familles de Lévites.

Fut démontée. Ce verset et le verset 21 impliquent, une dislocation de la tribu des Lévites non prévue dans l'ordre qui les concernait 2.17. Les deux divisions des Guersonites et des Mérarites, au lieu de marcher avec les Kéhathites entre les deux premières et les deux dernières divisions, sont placées ici entre la première (Juda) et la seconde (Ruben). On ne peut expliquer cette différence par la diversité des documents puisque notre passage, appartient à l'élohiste aussi bien que le chapitre 2. Mais on comprend que cette modification dans la marche fut amenée par un besoin pratique. Pour qu'en arrivant à la station prochaine les objets sacrés ne dussent pas attendre longtemps avant d'être recueillis dans le Tabernacle, il fallait que celui-ci ne tardât pas trop à être dressé ; et voilà pourquoi les Guersonites et les Mérarites, chargés des tentures et des piliers, prirent place avant la seconde division. Arrivant ainsi les premiers, ils pouvaient dresser le Tabernacle ; et les meubles sacrés, portés par les Kéhathites qui arrivaient assez longtemps après, pouvaient y être reçus immédiatement.
