Venez, retournons à l'Éternel ! Car il a déchiré, mais il nous guérira ; il a frappé, mais il bandera nos plaies. Il nous rendra la vie dans deux jours.

Les Israélites s'encouragent mutuellement à revenir à l'Eternel, qui est bon et puissant et qui guérira aussi certainement que c'est lui qui a frappé. Mais cette confiance est étrangère au sentiment sérieux de la sainteté de Dieu. La délivrance pour eux, c'est celle du châtiment, mais non pas du péché.

Ceux qui se sont volontairement éloignés de Dieu, en entraînant aussi, dans leur élan d'iniquité, une autre personne, devraient songer à retourner à Lui, pour leur bien, ce qui d'ailleurs, Le glorifierait. Il serait vraiment bon, lors d'une grande affliction, de garder des pensées d'espérance divine, de se rappeler à quel point Sa miséricorde à notre égard est toujours bien présente ; cela nous encouragerait à la repentance.

La délivrance de l'épreuve devrait être synonyme, pour le peuple, de passage de la mort à la vie. Dieu les fait véritablement renaître : cette assurance aurait dû les conduire à se tourner vers Lui. Ceci représente, pour ainsi dire, un parallèle futur à la résurrection de Jésus Christ.

Admirons la sagesse et la bonté de Dieu, quand le prophète prédit la délivrance de l'église, au temps de l'épreuve, et quand Il révèle notre possibilité de salut en Christ ; et maintenant, ces paroles sont accomplies, par la résurrection de Jésus, ce qui confirme à notre foi qu'Il est bien Celui qui devait venir, et qu'il ne faut pas porter nos regards sur un autre.

Il est une promesse précieuse et bénie : celle de la vie éternelle, qui mène à Dieu. L'assurance de l'intérêt que Dieu nous porte, est aussi certaine que celle de l'apparition du jour après la nuit sombre. Il viendra à nous, telle la première et la dernière pluie qui rafraîchit et fait fructifier la terre. La grâce de Dieu en Christ est à la fois, la première et la dernière pluie ; par elle, notre fruit et nos bonnes œuvres s'accomplissent. Comme le Rédempteur est sorti de la tombe, de même, Il vivifiera notre cœur et notre espérance, pour que nous placions notre confiance en Lui.

Le moindre signe d'espérance dans Sa parole est déjà un sûr chemin vers la lumière et le réconfort, celui qui mènera à la purification, à la Grâce bienfaisante et qui produira du fruit.
