Telle est l'interprétation généralement donnée de ce verset. Elle est seule admissible si on lit avec le texte reçu et quelques manuscrits : "le bien qui est parmi vous," chrétiens de Colosses.
Mais la pensée de l'apôtre serait bien générale et sans rapport avec le but spécial de la lettre. M. Oltramare propose une explication ingénieuse qui évite cet inconvénient.
Paul voudrait dire : "que la communion de foi qui nous unit soit efficace pour te faire connaître tout bien, toute pensée de charité, qui est en nous, en moi, Paul," à savoir la pensée de la grâce d'Onésime. Paul voudrait ainsi préparer insensiblement Philémon à la requête qu'il formulera tout à l'heure.
La difficulté que rencontre cette interprétation est dans les mots : pour Jésus-Christ qui paraissent superflus. Cependant on peut dire que la pensée charitable conçue par l'apôtre n'a pas seulement en vue Onésime, auquel elle profitera directement, mais Jésus-Christ lui-même qui est glorifié par tout sentiment de miséricorde et par tout acte de pardon.
